This is one of the biggest parts of making something sound underwater. One of the first things we notice is the general lack of high frequencies. How do these songs achieve that underwater feeling, what sounds do they use, and what effects do they apply?

The classic aquatic ambiance from Donkey Kong Country and dire dire docks from Super Mario 64. Video games have been trying to recreate the feeling of being underwater as long as there have been underwater levels, and they’ve created some of the most memorable songs in videogame history. Thankfully people have already tried to solve this challenge. We need to use sounds that are muted and relaxing, but what do they sound like and how do we put them into a song. This gives us a good idea of what direction we should go in to create an underwater atmosphere. Everything’s muffled, quiet, and relaxed. what do you hear? what does it sound like? you can hear waves but they sound like they’re far away. You bend over and dunk your head into the water. You’re standing in the open ocean and you can hear waves crashing all around you. Imagine you’re at the beach, You’ve waded out into the water. If we want to find out what sounds give that underwater feeling, let’s start by getting our feet wet. The song feels spacey and submerged, so how did they do it? How did Gunna and Turbo put their music underwater? “*Underwater synths* Speed it up, Speed it up Eat it up, Eat it up” Speed It Up - Gunna

We get an idea right away just looking at the title and the cover art, with Gunna standing underwater, and you can hear it in any number of tracks from the album. Now this album does have its share of flaws, the production falls off at points and Gunna’s vocals get somewhat tired after a while, but the water theme is pretty heavy and constant throughout the album. What does it sound like on the moon? in a volcano? at the bottom of the ocean? This is the idea behind the water themed “Drip or Drown 2” from Atlanta rapper Gunna and his longtime producer Turbo. Music has this ability to take you to places that would be otherwise impossible to reach.
